How it began?

The first Long-Term Care Conference was organized 1998 – at a time when long-term care in this country was in its infancy and there were not any examples that professional care could follow.

There was an urgent need for education and exchange of experiences between professionals – both practitioners and representatives of various authorities involved in the formation of a new field of medical care and services.

The conference enabled the long-term care environment to establish cooperation with Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, medical staff and university staff. Thanks to that the participants of the conference could present various concepts of the development of long-term care in our country. This event marked the beginning of a series of regular meetings aimed at preparing the personnel and the discussion around the Polish model of long-term care standards of service provided.

How it developed?

In the first Conference about 100 people took part. Since those days the number of participants has increased tenfold and now exceeds 1000 guests every year. Since 2003, the Conference has been an international educational event, which every year draws to Torun  professionals from all over Europe.  The conference and symposium participants can listen to the lectures of professionals on the subject of the latest solutions in the long-term care as well as of problems to overcome.

Where do the participants come from?

The participants come from many different countries including Germany, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and from the Netherlands.

Who do we cooperate with?

From the beginning the National Consultant in Nursing Chronically Ill and Disabled People – Elżbieta Szwałkiewicz and the President of the Polish Society of Gerontology – prof. Piotr Błędowski supports Torun Long-Term Care Days on its merits.
